Today, we are hiking the highest mountain of the Adriatic Islands, Vidova Gora. What a challenge. Vidova Gora has a variety of terrain and as we pursued the summit, we found open areas, pine forests, rocks and roots, everything you could want on a hike.

As we passed by this disrupted patch of earth, our guide Ivan explained it is the work of wild pigs. These pigs are known to swim from island to island and are thankfully seldom visible to hikers passing through.
If you see this red and white circular image, it is the symbol for designated trails in Europe. So, follow the circles – you may not be on the correct trail but at least you are on a trail.

At 84 degrees, this was the warmest day of week. An hour in, I had removed any extraneous layers. As we followed those circles up Vidora Gora, a fellow runner and I began peppering each other with questions about our lives – exchanging dialogue in French, trying to pull words and grammar from memory. It momentarily took our minds off our burning muscles as we climbed.
Reaching the summit, we were rewarded with some beautiful views,

and some delicious make-your-own sandwiches along with fresh fruit. A regional favorite spread, ajvar, made with roasted red peppers and sometimes eggplant, accompanies most sandwiches. Many families have their own special recipes for ajvar.
After descending the mountain, we had a couple hours on Zlatni Rat Beach. This extraordinary beach is considered one of the most beautiful in the world.

Many of our group took a swim in the beautiful water. I opted for a walk around the perimeter of the beach.

After two gorgeous days and nights on Brac Island, tomorrow we’re off to Korcula Island. See you there.
