Soaking in the Walled City of Dubrovnik

Having begun our hiking journey in Split at the nothern Adriatic coast, leaving our final stop in Korcula, we continue to travel south to Dubrovnik. On arrival, we bused to the Old City where we had an outstanding guided tour and lecture. The history of this UNESCO site is so incredibly long and complex, this blog would not do even a summary justice.

Over the millenium up to recent years, Dubrovnik has experienced many tragic events including fires, earthquakes, war and invasion. Still, its beauty and charm persists. Although there are numerous books on its history, if you are looking for an overview of its past, this Brief History of Dubrovnik would be useful.

I found the incredible architecture, the wealth of information available, and the crowds a bit overwheming. We spent some time walking through the many alleys and byways among shops, museums, a Franciscan pharmacy many centuries old, restaurants and apartments. Then, decided to take the many steps to the top of the walls that encircle the Old City.

What a frightening treat. It really is high, more than 6,000 feet from the base with beautiful views, as expected.

But alot going on up there that I didn’t expect. Such as,

The view of a restaurant tucked into the side of the wall. How do they get there?

Apartments. Yes, people have apartments within the Old City. How about climbing a thousand steps to get home? A great exercise regimen.

Beautiful well-manicured gardens

Statuary outside yet another restaurant

And surprisingly, a soccer field

There is a whole world of activity atop these ancient walls. If you’re planning to make this trek, give yourself a couple of hours to walk the walls and longer if you plan to stop at any of the many restaurants and lounges up there.

Over 1,000 steep steps back down from our perch atop the negotiated successfully. Although it was time to leave for our farewell dinner with Gate 1, I have a few more days to enjoy Dubrovnik while at the Friendship Force World Conference.
