It Must Be the Start of Summer if —-

It must be the start of summer as I continue my tradition of running a Memorial Day Weekend 5K supporting our military.

This year the race I chose was the Platinum Memorial 5K held on City Island.

I arrived just 15 minutes before race start, then had difficulty getting into my runsignup account. With the help of a couple of race volunteers we managed to get me registered in time to line up. I’m sure I looked something like this.

The Platinum 5K is an out-and-back circling the island, then south on the lower level of the Greenbelt with a turnaround near the Shipoke neighborhood.

Following the race, the beautiful weather encouraged runners to hang around a bit and enjoy one another’s company. Below in bold stars & stripes, is Jen, my favorite nurse at Aspire Prime and Judy, a fellow competitive senior runner.

Post race I joined Bob & Frank from my local Tuesday Running Group (age group awardees by the way) for refreshments at the Harrisburg Beach Club on City Island.

The Platinum Memorial 5K will donate all funds raised at the event to four local Gold Star Families. Thank you for a well-done race and for your work with the families of US military members who died in battle.

Circling back, this start-of-summer weekend began for me on Saturday at the Harrisburg Arts Fest, volunteering at the Friendship Force booth. The weather was beautiful, and the music from the jazz stage wafted through the air as we chatted with visitors strolling down Front Street.

Adding to the beautiful summer weekend was an invitation from our friend at Mr. B. Entertainment to a movie night in the country where we sat cuddled under blankets in lawn chairs, watching a rom-com on a huge outdoor screen.

I hope all of you felt the spirit of summer wind its way into your life this weekend. Let me know how that happened for you.

Here’s to Summer!
