Hiking Day 6 – Wales Coastal Path, ten miles Aberporth to Gwbert

Day Six and our final day of hiking the Coastal Path. As we hike along, I’m thinking how much I will miss this fresh sea air. the incredible views and the company of my fellow hikers.

Near the start and again at the finish of today’s hike, the path takes us away from the coast. In the early miles, we are routed around a military range. Near the finish, we hike beside a corn field before we emerge back to the coast and our final destination for this hike, the town of Gwbert.

Before arriving in Gwbert we make a stop at Mwnt, where the majority of our group took the opportunity to hike to the top of Mwnt and enjoy the views.

I opted to spend time taking a closer look at the Holy Cross Church built somewhere around the 13th century. Its simple white-washed appearance belies the extraordinary detail and history of the interior. This article from British Express provides some fascinating historical detail. This is a pilgrimage church and was considered a chapel of ease for sailors.

I also spotted what appeared to be a real indoor bathroom located near a caravan. After five days of crouching behind gorse bushes, it was a welcome sight.

On my return to the church, I stopped to say hello to Millie.

We arrive walking directly to the Gwbert, a friendly hotel with a great bistro. The view of the Teifi Estuary with the river coming into the bay is relaxing.

On an early morning departure to Manchester our transfer train was cancelled because of railroad strikes. Our leader miraculously and quickly moved us to another train that was leaving the station immediately.

We arrived in Manchester as Pride Weekend was getting underway. Every building in downtown was alight in the colors of the rainbow flag.

The end of a fabulous hiking journey with fellow hikers on a trail I have been wanting to hike since reading about it in 2012.

Thank you Keystone Trails Association for a well-planned week of hiking along the Wales Coast.

Aer Lingus, take us home.
