Our series of hikes with Gate 1 began as we departed Split by ferry destined for Brac Island, and from the upper deck enjoyed the view of the coastline and the sparkling water of the Adriatic.

Our first stop on the island is the small village of Skrip, primarily an ancient farming area. Our 5-mile hike takes us down roads between slope and fields of olive and fig trees.
Today’s hikes were described as ‘moderate’ in difficulty. I would agree, but I was unaccustomed to the hard pack surface for several miles with much of it downhill. I would have better chosen a softer shoe than my hiking boots.

On to the village of Dol, beautiful landscape and buildings made from local rock also used to construct fences along the hillside to contain farm fields and animals.
Goats and donkeys have traditionally been the most important animals on Brac. I love this statue, reflecting the role of women farmers who primarily care for goats as well as the goat’s role in feeding families with the milk used as a base in much of the cuisine.

I was thankful for the stop for a mid-day lunch at a local farm where we were introduced to some of the wines of the region. The tapinade variations soaked up with fresh bread were delicious.

After lunch, we made our way down to Postira Bay and our hotel for the evening, the Bluesun Hotel Amor, in Supetar, enamored with the many beautiful views from our trail.

Tomorrow, we’re staying on the island of Brac for a more vigorous hike. Stay tuned.
